Our Story
Founded in 2008 by Matt Bartle, Wally’s Place was created with a simple vision: to bring the South Hero community together over great food, fresh coffee, and friendly service.
A former engineer who relocated to Vermont from New Jersey, Matt recognized an opportunity for a welcoming, quick-service breakfast spot where locals and visitors alike could enjoy a delicious meal and a sense of community. Having grown up with a love of bagels, he made them the cornerstone of the business, building a menu around fresh bagels, quality coffee, homemade breads, and satisfying sandwiches.
The name Wally’s Place carries a special meaning. Matt named the business in honor of his grandfather, Walter “Wally” Niebling, who became an active and beloved member of the community in the 80's. He was known for his generosity and dedication to helping others, Wally supported the local food shelf and established “Wally’s Basket,” an effort that encouraged local businesses to collect food donations for those in need. His commitment to giving back left a lasting impression on the community and inspired Matt to carry that spirit forward through the business. What began as a small, hole-in-the-wall bakery on Ferry Road gradually grew into the neighborhood café and bakery located in the heart of South Hero. Through consistent quality, fresh ingredients, and genuinely friendly service, Wally’s established itself as a trusted local gathering place and a recognizable part of the community.
From the beginning, Wally’s has valued supporting local agriculture and partnering with area farms to bring fresh, locally sourced ingredients to its customers. Its mission remains rooted in offering a healthier, delicious alternative for breakfast and lunch, with a focus on superior brewed coffee, fresh-tasting bagels, homemade breads, and thoughtfully prepared sandwiches. In 2023, Wally’s Place entered a new chapter under new ownership. While leadership has changed, the heart of the business remains the same: serving great food, supporting local producers, welcoming the community, and continuing the tradition that began in 2008.
Meet the owner, Marilee Silva
After 40 years away, I returned to my home state of Vermont in June 2023 and became the proud new owner of Wally’s Place!
A 1983 graduate of Milton High School, I began my career journey by serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Ord, California, where I attained the rank of Sergeant (E-5) and performed as a clarinet player and vocalist with the 7th Infantry Division Band.
My career has taken me across the country, with lots of experience in restaurant management, hospitality, catering, and customer service. I have managed Domino’s Pizza, Pelican Pizza, Foster’s Freeze, and Wendy’s, as well as coordinated large-scale events at the Providence Marriott. Most recently, I served as Director of the VIP Division at dnata Catering, overseeing premium catering for private aircraft, professional sports teams, foreign dignitaries, and other distinguished guests traveling throughout the United States and abroad.
After raising two wonderful daughters and building a career in Rhode Island and Connecticut, I felt the pull to return to Vermont and be closer to family, including my mother in North Hero.
When my cousin mentioned that Wally’s Place was looking for a new owner, I saw an opportunity to return to my roots and take on an exciting new challenge. Things moved quickly, and I jumped right in giving my two weeks’ notice and learning the art of making bagels along the way!
Throughout my career, I’ve always believed in hard work, adaptability, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. I’m excited to bring my experience, passion for hospitality, and commitment to excellent customer service to Wally’s Place.
I’m proud to be back in Vermont and look forward to welcoming old friends, new faces, and visitors alike to Wally’s Place. Thank you for supporting this local business and being part of its next chapter! We've got the bagels and so much more!
